Not Lost on Me

Tokyo is a crazy town so pictures of it online is like Christmas in July. And lucky you, it's only June!

There are a couple more photos I've taken today and haven't run through the lab yet, but here are many bizarrities to enjoy.

Interesting to many will be shots of Shinjuku district and the Park Tower, including the 52nd floor bar of despair and alienation where much of Lost In Translation takes place.

I wound up there Saturday evening, after indeed I got lost exiting Shinjuku station and found myself by Shinjuku-Chuo park, which houses one of Tokyo's most permanent homeless populations that I remember reading about in the New York Times some while back. Although their tidy blue tarp tents should surely count as homes in my book.

Surrounding this rather shady park (and not just for the trees) are some gi-normous skyscrapers housing the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and the Park Hyatt that is perched on the upper floors of the Park Tower skyscraper.

I went up and had a drink.

Interestingly they don't even have Suntory whiskey on the menu -- the booze that Bill Murray shills in the flick. There are now two drinks in honor of the movie: the L.I.T. and the Sofia, I think they were. They sounded pretty lame.

So I had a martini to try and class up the joint.

At seventeen dollars it better be the best martini I ever had. Well it was pretty good, and the "free" nuts and wasabe crackers I always enjoy. The view would have been good if it wasn't cloudy and if, like, Tokyo wasn't a megalopolis with tens of millions of cars and people filling the air with their soot and yearning.

The bar itself is lovely. Of course. It seems much smaller in person, and wraps around the south, west, and perhaps north sides of the elevator shaft at the very top of the building. The staff didn't seem to like me exploring around too much so I didn't push it.

Service was quite slow. I was adequately dressed, I think, and as you can see in a self-portrait in perhaps one of the famed elevators (I hope I got the right one).

Another interesting point is the Hyatt's lobby. You know the place "Bob" meets his Japanese hosts, and where Scarlett returns his jacket at the very end.

I naturally assumed it was on the ground floor, but of course the bottom floor of the hotel is on the 41st floor of the building. Just a little tidbit to mar repeat viewings.

I went many other places in Tokyo (like Roppongi right after the Hyatt, and man...) but who's got the time to write endlessly about it? Or read for that matter. So I'll tell ya later.
